Google tests offline Gmail

Wednesday, January 28, 2009 by

On the Gmail (aka Google Mail for those of us in the UK) blog, Google yesterday announced that it has begun testing of its offline email facilities, using Google Gears. Gears is a web browser extension which creates a local copy of online data, and is already used in Google Docs (as well as by several third party vendors such as Zoho). While it will take some time for this to be rolled out as far as Google Apps mail (and the blog warns that there may still be a few “kinks” in the feature), it is a welcome (and long overdue) development.

See our On The Radar report on Google Enterprise.

UPDATE Google has now announced that it is also enabling offline access for Google Apps Calendar users.
