Socialtext launches microblogging tool

Wednesday, March 4, 2009 by

Socialtext today announced the general availability of its enterprise microblogging tool, Socialtext Signals. In private beta with Socialtext customers since September, Signals provides capabilities similar to tools such as Twitter, but within a secure enterprise context. Signals is embedded in the Socialtext collaboration platform, and allows individuals to post short broadcast messages – for example related to what they are currently working on, or asking a question – which can be viewed by others within the organisation via the Socialtext Dashboard. As the first of the major enterprise collaboration software vendors to publicy release a microblogging capability, Socialtext has integrated the tool neatly with the rest of its Socialtext 3.0 platform, for example enabling individuals’ Signals messages to be included in their activity feeds in their profile page, and allowing users to post a Signals message whenever they save changes to a wiki or blog, summarising the edits they have made.

At the same time, the company announced the private beta of a further product, Socialtext Desktop. This is a standalone client application, which allows users to view both Signals feeds and activity feeds from Socialtext Workspaces and Socialtext People. Based on Adobe AIR, Desktop enables users to view either all feeds within the organisation, or just those of the people they track or “follow”, and also includes optional pop-up notifications.

These announcements demonstrate the continuing pace of development in this market at present, and also highlight the growing impact of social software tools on the collaboration software market. Keep watching, as we’ll be publishing a report on the role of social software later this month.
