Unravelling the social software hype

Wednesday, May 20, 2009 by

As I trailed last month, we have just published two new reports in the MWD Collaboration Continuous Advisory service.

Social Software for the Enterprise examines the value of this much-hyped new area of technology in the context of enterprise collaboration, looking at the business benefits that it offers both inside and outside the organisation, and providing advice to organisations wondering if this is something they should be considering. Key messages from the report include:

  • adoption of social software within enterprises remains low, with most early adopters still experimenting through departmental or project-based solutions
  • social software risks are as much about governance as security, particularly where it is used in an externally-facing context, in terms of what can and should be shared with third parties
  • the value of social software comes from its integration with broader collaboration technologies and practices, and ultimately this will become less distinct as a market in its own right.

We have also published a case study on Canadian engineering services company Hatch, which highlights the organisation’s use of online communities to support collaboration and knowledge sharing among its globally-distributed teams. Hatch is a particularly interesting best practice example because the organisation approached its use of social software as a centralised, enterprise-wide strategy from day one, and has had considerable success in terms of adoption and progress of the initiative – it’s well worth a read.

Also this month, we’ll be updating our collaboration vendor capability assessments, so stay posted!
