Zoho launches new discussions app

Wednesday, September 23, 2009 by

Zoho today announced the release of  Zoho Discussions, a community-oriented application which is based around discussions forums, but which also includes features such as tagging, bookmarking and social networking. However unlike most of Zoho’s existing collaborative applications (for example mail, instant messaging, wikis and office productivity/collaborative editing tools), Zoho Discussions is positioned specifically as a Zoho Business App, and comes without the beta tag, and with a premium pricing model layered on top of a basic free option. The only other Zoho collaboration software application positioned in this way is the company’s web conferencing tool, Zoho Meeting.

This new product, along with its positioning as a business app rather than a commodity consumer app, makes a lot of sense for Zoho, and – while integration with the other Zoho apps is currently limited to Zoho Chat (as part of the premium packages only) – this application should provide a good platform for tying all of the Zoho collaboration software capabilities together, particularly through its Dashboard capability. It should also help to cement Zoho’s position as a competitor in the highly competitive and innovative collaboration software market, since until now, despite its broad portfolio of applications (many of which still retain the “beta” tag) Zoho has not really gained significant visibility beyond its collaborative editing and CRM tools.
