Combining BPM with event processing

Earlier this week we published the second part of a two-part report focused on “Event-driven BPM” – in other words, the possibilities associated with combining event processing technology with your BPM initiative. This second part focuses on what you can do to get started, how to think about the technology pieces you might need, and highlights a couple of skills and capabilities you need to assess before you can deliver real value. The first part (”An overview of event-driven BPM”) was published back in May and you can find it here.

I just thought I’d share one key graphic from the second report that highlights three of the main ways in which event processing technology can add value to automated (or part-automated, managed) business processes:

Three ways to combine EP and business processes

(You can click on the diagram above to see the full-size version).

There are three ways that event processing can add value – and the scope of this value isn’t restricted to “straight through” highly automated processes:

  1. Using event processing to reduce latency at the process edge.
  2. Using event processing to link processes to each other, and to complementary tools and environments.
  3. Using event processing to radically redesign the way that work is automated – enabling high levels of dynamicity in process structures.

Conversations we’ve had with business analysts, IT architects and process specialists here in Europe indicate that most organisations are just starting to explore what kind of value event-driven BPM might offer them, so we think these reports are pretty timely. We’d love to get your feedback!

The reports are only available to our BPM advisory service customers by default, but you can buy them as standalone items, too (just contact sales at mwdadvisors dot com if you’re interested in finding out more).

One last thing: an easy way to keep up-to-date with the reports that MWD publishes is to subscribe to this feed.
