Driving business agility and visibility with Process Intelligence

Thursday, February 10, 2011 by

On Jan 25 we launched the fourth in our series of online, on-demand MWD Insights events: this one focused on the topic of Process Intelligence.

The topic of Process Intelligence has received quite a lot of attention over the past couple of years, but we find that despite this, there’s still a lot of confusion out there regarding what the true focus and scope of this thing called “Process Intelligence” actually is. Some people see Process Intelligence as simply the next iteration of what’s often called Business Activity Monitoring (BAM); others say it’s the point at which BPM and BI meet. We see things a little differently.

A more productive way to look at Process Intelligence, we think, is to see it as

An organisational capability that aims to ensure that companies consistently and quickly apply relevant knowledge, to and within business processes, in order to provide better visibility of performance, support strategy alignment, improve business agility, improve operational decision-making, and identify issues and their root causes.

This means that Process Intelligence isn’t just about monitoring processes; it’s about applying intelligence in a structured way to link an organisation’s strategy through to day-to-day execution of operations. In other words, it describes a holistic approach to business improvement that’s deeply intelligence (rather than gut-feel) -driven. In other (other) words, you can think of it as developing a process-focused take on a performance management framework. Not just BAM!

This topic is something that my colleague Helena Schwenk and I have been researching for some time, and in addition to our online Driving Business Agility and Visibility with Process Intelligence event, we’re currently in the process of completing two in-depth Strategic Insights reports on the topic. This will be followed shortly after by a set of vendor profiles that show how different suppliers are supporting Process Intelligence concepts today.

The event content comprises two webcasts: the first, which provides an introduction to the topic, is called Process Intelligence: Linking strategy and execution. The second webcast, which dives into the practicalities and also includes a case study, is called Gaining and maintaining Process Intelligence momentum.

The event is immediately accessible to anyone with a free MWD Guest Pass account; if you don’t want to register on our site, though, you can also use your LinkedIn account to sign in. The event has already had around 300 visitors, but we’d like more! We’d love to find out what you think of it (you can do that by visiting the feedback page on the event microsite; anyone leaving feedback receives a discount code that entitles them to money off some of our premium research reports).

Thanks are due to the sponsors who are supporting this event and enabling us to deliver it free: Progress Software, Software AG and TIBCO. Each of these sponsors has provided information about their support for Process Intelligence on the event microsite; please take time to visit their online ‘booths’ while you’re checking out the event.

One last thing: we’d like to reassure you that although this event is sponsored, all the event content has been independently researched and produced by MWD, and the sponsors have had no input into the production of the content.

Enjoy the event!
