synopsis

At its Dreamforce event in November 2009, Salesforce.com announced its entry to the collaboration software market with the launch of Salesforce Chatter, a Facebook-like enterprise collaboration platform which will become generally available in mid-2010. With Chatter, Salesforce.com aims to extend its reach within customer organisations beyond the departmental deployments that it achieves (to great success) with its CRM applications, to the entire organisation. This report considers the opportunity for Salesforce.com in this market, the impact on the broader enterprise collaboration software market that Salesforce.com's entry will cause, and the implications for organisations that are developing a collaboration software strategy.

key messages

  • Salesforce Chatter goes further than just being a Facebook for the enterprise
  • Chatter is a great opportunity for Salesforce.com to move beyond its CRM comfort zone, but it won't be an easy journey
  • A great opportunity for current Salesforce.com customers, less appeal for new customers.

table of contents

  • Summary
  • A whole new world of opportunity for Salesforce.com
  • Messages to adopters.
