synopsis

Over the past five years, the BPMN process modelling notation has become an important force in the development of the market for BPM technology tools and consulting services. However its value to BPM adopters in industry has always had a question mark against it. Now a new version of the standard, BPMN 2.0, has been given a lot of industry airtime – and the chief backers of the specification (the core of which is IBM, Oracle and SAP) cite benefits for BPM technology vendors and BPM adopters. The truth is not so simple.

key messages

  • The history of technology standards in BPM is short, but messy
  • BPMN 2.0 is touted as a big move forward for BPM technology vendors and adopters alike
  • In reality, today BPMN 2.0 is at best only a marginally better mousetrap.
